Bernard Vilakazi is a Transport Economist and Sector Specialist with over a decade of
experience shaping South Africa’s freight and logistics landscape. As Vice-Principal
(Specialist) for Transport & Logistics at Absa Business Banking, he designs strategic
frameworks that empower SMEs, corporates, and cross-border operators to unlock
value through sustainable transport models, funding solutions, and infrastructure
readiness.
Bernard’s expertise spans road freight, warehousing, fleet optimization, emissions
strategy, and customs compliance. He leads ESG-focused engagements and integrates
logistics strategy with credit and coverage to drive inclusive growth. His career includes
leadership roles at Takealot, Heineken (Distell), and Standard Bank.
Holding a BCom Honours in Transport Economics and an Executive MBA, Bernard has
completed advanced training in ESG, Lean Six Sigma, and infrastructure economics. A
committed member of multiple supply chain associations, he brings technical depth,
regional insight, and a passion for transforming African logistics under the AfCFTA
framework.
